We’ve received the following from the Independent Society of Musicians:
We’ve just launched a new survey investigating discrimination in the music sector. As someone who has previously supported the ISM’s campaign for a safer music sector, please will you take the survey and share it with your network.
We have been campaigning to make music workplaces safer since 2018. Now we want to find out if there has been any meaningful change since our last report in 2022 – and if not, what needs to happen.
The survey is open to anyone working in music, no matter what you do. Please will you help us by taking the survey and ask your network to take part too. It should take around 10 minutes and all answers are completely anonymous.
This survey is incredibly important because the responses will help us shape the future of music.
Thank you for your support.

Findings from Dignity at work 2
The ISM’s groundbreaking research into discrimination in music has exposed the devastating scale of discrimination and sexual harassment in music workplaces.
Our 2022 Dignity at work 2 report found 66% of respondents had experienced discrimination at work – up from 47% in 2018. The majority of this discrimination (78%) was committed against women and over half of the discrimination (58%) would be classed as sexual harassment.
We also found that 77% of respondents did not report the behaviour. Over half said this was because ‘it’s just the culture here’.
Former ISM President and co-author of Dignity at work 2 Vick Bain said:
‘Music needs safe and inclusive workplaces. Too many people working in music have had their careers destroyed and their lives damaged by discrimination and harassment. Through my PhD research and my day-to-day work in music, I hear these stories constantly. That is why the ISM’s ongoing research is so important.
‘We know this survey is asking people to share details of extremely difficult experiences. Every response is anonymous and will be treated with respect. Your testimony will help us fight for safer workplaces.
‘The ISM also provides excellent support and advice for members who have been affected by any of these issues. Please take advantage of that help if you need it. Details can be found on the ISM website.’
