Surrey Hills International Music Festival (formerly Investec International Music Festival) brings world-class artists to perform in beautiful venues in the Surrey Hills, in early May each year. Following 2022’s Vaughan Williams celebrations, the 2023 season sees the Festival broadening its scope to encompass Hollywood jazz with The Julian Bliss Quintet; sacred choral works both old and new with Tenebrae performing Bach motets alongside James MacMillan; exquisite chamber music from the great Canadian-born cellist Gary Hoffman alongside Artistic Director and pianist Wu Qian, and the Sitkovetsky Trio – plus young artist performances and guided walks in the glorious Surrey Hills countryside. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, festival founders Wu Qian and Tessa Marchington were keen to bring their musician friends back home to the area where they both grew up and to give local audiences the chance to enjoy world-class performances right here on their doorstep. In 2010 they founded the Festival with three days of concerts given by artists including Nicola Benedetti and Lucy Crowe, and over the last decade, the Festival has developed to encompass two weeks each May and welcomed many great artists including Dame Sarah Connolly (Festival Patron), Natalie Clein, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Maxim Rysanov, The English Concert, Philharmonia Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, Tenebrae, The Tallis Scholars and many other eminent international artists and ensembles.
Now in its 14th season, the Festival is going from strength to strength, presenting the highest calibre concerts in beautiful and intimate venues which create a wonderful sense of closeness to the performers and to their music. A warm spirit of friendship and enthusiasm exists amongst audience members at concerts, and the Festival is enormously grateful to have such a loyal and supportive community returning year after year. In fact, why go to Vienna, Paris, New York or even London when you can see international stars in the Surrey Hills?
