Festival of Early Music in Kent

In that little corner of heaven that is an East Kentish churchyard, Alfred and Mark Deller’s early music festival still flourishes in director Robert Hollingworth’s seventh year.  Large-scale concerts are I Fagiolini’s one-to-a-part take on Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers and Handel’s ‘Music for Royal Occasions’ with northern visitors, Manchester Baroque.  The London Handel Players offer concertos by J.S.Bach, Telemann, Leclair and the festival opens with a Dowland/Purcell anniversary recital from vocal magician soprano Ruby Hughes and lutenist Jonas Nordberg.  Also Italian madrigals from Fieri Consort and ‘Softest Thunder’ from lutenist Toby Carr. An innovation is Brean Hammond’s play ‘Master Byrd’ with live music from The Renaissance Singers, while Sarah Latto’s young Echo Ensemble gives an early and contemporary recital before Nicholas Mulroy’s Cubaroque liven things up in the tent with ‘Havana Nights’.
