Southwell Music Festival

23 to 26 August 2024

The Southwell Music Festival was founded in 2014 and is an annual, top-quality classical music festival, taking place in the run up each August Bank Holiday, to celebrate classical music, to inspire local musicians – especially young people – and to raise the profile of the town and its magnificent mediaeval Minster. The Festival performances are centred at Southwell Minster, the Cathedral for Nottinghamshire, and in the historic State Chamber of the Archbishop’s Palace.

The Southwell Music Festival is the idea of Marcus Farnsworth – a former Head Chorister at Southwell Minster and now an award-winning international baritone.  The Festival’s Associate Artistic Director is violinist Jamie Campbell. The Festival’s Patrons are Dame Felicity Lott DBE, FRAM, FRCM, Harry Christophers CBE and Sir John Peace, Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire. Hugh Canning, Music Critic of the Sunday Times wrote of one of our past concerts: ‘The artistic results are remarkable. The thirty-nine professional choral singers made a huge sound to rival the big amateur forces Elgar envisaged, but effortlessly created a sense of intimacy in Southwell’s beautiful, far from grandiose Minster. There is a palpable sense of a community in this tiny market town, wanting to experience music at the highest level, and Farnsworth….and his colleagues are providing it.’
